Introduction

The two-cents carmine coils were issued in both vertical and horizontal formats. As vertical, or endwise, coils, they were supplied in rolls of 1000 subjects and were perforated 8 or 12 horizontally. As horizontal, or sidewise, coils, they were provided in rolls of 500 and were perforated 8 vertically. See Summary for information pertaining to the plates.

Shades

Shades vary from dull rose in the earlier printings to carmine and scarlet in the later printings.


Retouches and Re-entries

Marler reports that the only retouches that he found in either the horizontal or vertical coils were to the vertical line in the right numeral box.
