The one-cent yellow booklet format may be found in two arrangements: panes of six and panes of four. The pane of six variety was issued as a one-cent booklet containing four such panes, whereas the pane of four was part of a combination booklet containing three panes, the one-cent yellow, a two-cents green and a three-cents brown or carmine.
The six-pane format was printed from the same plates as had been used for the one-cent green. One new plate was laid down for the four-pane arrangement, however. It was of Type Z (14 rows of four, for a total of 56 subjects. (See Formats for more information on booklet types and Summary for more information on the booklet plates.)
All booklet pane issues, whether from the pane of six or pane of four, are Die I. (See One Cent Yellow - Sheets for a description of the die types.)
While panes of each variety have a pale chrome yellow shade, the four-pane format is also found in deep chrome yellow.
