Jean Lapointe appointed to the Senate by John Peebles as published in the September-October 2001 issue of The Canadian Philatelist. On June 13, 2001 Prime Minister Jean Chrétien announced that Her Excellency the Governor General summoned Jean Lapointe, OC, to the Senate. Mr. Lapointe is a life member of our Society. A talented artist, the actor, singer, comedian, and raconteur, Jean Lapointe began his stage career as part of the due Les Jérolas. The duo appeared on the famous Ed Sullivan Show and their act was also a smash hit at the Olympia in Paris, France. In 1975, Lapointe launched his solo career that included stage performances, a record release, and appearances in two feature films. Since then, the innovative performer has created numerous characters in more than 15 new shows and an equal number of musical recordings. Respected by theatre critics, and loved by his fans, Mr. Lapointe is an icon of Francophone culture. The tribute paid him at the 2000 Gala des Oliviers is an example of the esteem in which he is held by the public. Concerned with social and community problems, the consummate entertainer is committed to the fight against alcoholism and other drug abuses across Quebec. The Jean Lapointe Foundation provides funds to more than 30 organizations working to rehabilitate drug addicts throughout the province. In recognition of his many artistic achievements and his involvement in social causes, Mr. Lapointe was named an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1984. He has received the Commemorative Medal for the 125th Anniversary of the Confederation of Canada from the Governor General as well as honourary doctorates from two universities. Sadly, his second wife, Cécile passed away recently; his first wife died more than 10 years ago. In addition to being a life member of our Society, the inveterate performer and social activist is also a member of the Stamp Advisory Committee of Canada Post Corporation. Me. Lapointe was born in 1935.
